Giving Back With Purpose

Each year I spend a week in August with kids that have Crohn’s or Colitis Disease, as a Counselor at a Camp in Texas. As a survivor, and still fighter of Crohn’s, it’s a great way for me to give back and truly understand what the kids are going through and do what I can to help them learn they can lead a full life with the disease. To be real, I do it for the kids, but every year I come back having been humbled and touched by the awe I am in with the courage and determination these kids, from ages 7 to 18, have. They come to a place, that for a week everyone is the same. Not one of them is “different” or “odd”, and they can all relate to each other, talk about their issues and be comfortable in this safe place.

As we grow in our careers, it’s important to be involved in organizations, give back to the community and try to make a difference. The difference will affect the organization and community you are giving back to, but will make a bigger impact on you if you are giving back with a purpose. Here are a few tips to think about when you are volunteering.

Be passionate about the cause

If you feel a connection to the cause you are volunteering for you, you will be more dedicated to it.

Get involved

Don’t just join for the purpose of being a member. Get involved and really be a part of it. The commitment will guarantee you show up for every meeting and want to make a difference.

Networking

Every opportunity you volunteer for is an opportunity to meet new people.

Be visible

Getting out of your comfort zone is a great time to be seen and show others your abilities.

You might learn something

Always be open to discovering new things. You may just learn something that you didn’t count on.

Take a leap and volunteer to help your industry, community or someone not as fortunate as you. I have no doubt you will come away getting out of it much more than you put in!

Make it a great day!
