We’ve been taught to admire hard work. Long hours. Full calendars. Being the first one in and the last one out. And there’s certainly something to be said for commitment and a strong work ethic.
But somewhere along the way, many of us started wearing busy like a badge of honor.
With Labor Day here, maybe the better question isn’t, “Am I working hard enough?” Maybe it’s, “Am I spending my time on the work that actually matters?” Great leadership isn’t measured by how exhausted we are at the end of the day. It’s measured by the impact we make, the people we develop, the decisions we have the courage to make—and whether we’re leaving enough room in our lives for the people and things that matter outside of work.
Hard work helped many of us get where we are. Wisdom teaches us when to put the work down.
