Today is National Boss/Employee Exchange Day—a reminder that leadership can look very different depending on which side of the desk you are sitting on. As leaders, we may see deadlines, budgets, client expectations and the pressure to deliver results. Our employees may see unclear priorities, competing demands or decisions being made without understanding how those decisions affect their daily work. Neither perspective is necessarily wrong—but neither one tells the whole story.
Great leadership begins when we become curious enough to see the workplace through someone else’s eyes. This week, ask a member of your team: “What is one thing I could better understand about your work?” Then listen—not to explain or solve, but simply to understand. You may discover an obstacle you can remove, a contribution you have overlooked or a better way forward. Sometimes the leadership advantage comes from changing seats long enough to change our perspective.
