Procrastinating? Try Lowering the Stakes.

We all put off uncomfortable or tedious tasks sometimes, especially when they’re a small part of a bigger project or a long-term goal. How can you stop your impulse to procrastinate? First, commit to a deadline. Circle a date on your calendar, and hold yourself accountable. Then make tiny behavioral changes. Instead of focusing on the enormous task ahead of you, lower the bar and find a manageable way to get started. If you find yourself overwhelmed by your inbox, for example, try replying to just one email. Also, lower the stakes. If it feels like you’re making a huge decision, you might feel paralyzed. Instead, reframe your project as an experiment, in which you recognize that the outcome is uncertain, and set your expectations accordingly. When the pressure is off, it’s a lot easier to motivate ourselves to get started.

Make it a great day!
