How Is Your Relationship With Your Manager?

Monday, June 17, 2013

Good morning ,

I attending a breakfast meeting last week at 7:00 (yes that would be a.m.) to hear David Spivey, who is the Director of Leadership Programs with the University of Texas at Dallas.   Normally, I don’t agree to attend anything at 7:00 a.m. unless it includes my running shoes or my yoga mat, however, I was asked nicely, the breakfast was free and I was very interested in hearing what David had to say.

I knew I would learn something from David and most likely be able to assist my clients from his advise and knowledge, and I always enjoy working a room of non-morning people when I’m so a morning person; they despise me and I have such fun!

David spoke on Cultivating a Culture of Leadership.   A survey was done by Gallup asking, Why do GOOD people leave jobs?  80,000 HR Surveys, the #1 reason for leaving, listen up bosses, people left because they didn’t have a good relationship with their manager.

So here are the Top 10 things people said they want out of a leader, get your pencils ready because this is important stuff.  (I copied these in no particular order).

  • Clear Vision
  • Empowerment
  • Clear Communication
  • Positive Energy
  • Core Values
  • Integrity
  • To Listen
  • Good Reputation
  • Recognition
  • Be Transparent
Leadership is about Influence and Impact and people will not follow you if they do not trust you.
It was worth being there early for.
