When You’re Put on the Spot in a Meeting, Breath and Don’t Panic!

A lot of my colleagues get very uncomfortable if they are called on in a meeting to speak and weren’t prepared. Here are a few quick tips so you’re never caught off guard.

  • Prior to your next meeting, look through the agenda and write some notes about questions you have and any points you might raise.
  • Always go into every meeting prepared.
  • If you’re called on in the meeting, speak slowly and confidently, and introduce your comments with some context so that colleagues know where you are headed.
  • If someone asks you a question that catches you off guard, don’t be afraid to say you don’t know the answer. Practice some simple responses for these moments: “I don’t have that information, but I will get it to you by 1 PM.” And always end by asking, “Did I answer your question?”
  • Pay attention and listen.  The answers may already be there.
  • Believe in your answers; courage is admirable
  • Knowledge is power; know what you are talking about.
  • Practice, practice, practice!

Make it a great day!
